Millet in Brandenburg
Revitalisation of millet cultivation for Brandenburg
The project is dedicated to the revitalisation of millet cultivation in Brandenburg under changed climatic conditions. The cultivation methods for the drought-tolerant and undemanding millet (Panicum miliaceum) are being researched and optimised. Comprehensive variety trials are being carried out with around 30 millet varieties, primarily panicum millet, in comparison with other types and related species.
The suitability for cultivation at higher temperatures and lower precipitation levels during the vegetation period is being tested. The project is also investigating how the varieties can be processed and are suitable for human consumption. The project participants are also researching alternative uses such as animal feed and material and energy utilisation. The characterisation of the ingredients – one of the ILU’s main tasks – forms the basis for the suitability of different millet varieties as feed and food. The project participants are also cooperating with mills to test the huskability of the millet varieties.
Practical trials serve to develop economical cultivation methods and lead to cultivation instructions for practical use, which, for example, contain specific solutions for late weed infestation of the crop. Here, the ILU is working together with the Verein zur Erhaltung und Rekultivierung von Nutzpflanzen (VERN). Overall, the project aims to create a basis for establishing millet as a drought-tolerant, versatile and sustainable crop in Brandenburg and thus make a forward-looking contribution to climate-adapted, regional agriculture and nutrition.
